October 27, 2016-NC- Alligator River

October 27, 2016
7:15am-Heading towards Alligator River today around mile 84.
As we were leaving, we noticed some of hurricane Matthew's trail. The guy at the marina said a lot have been cleaned up since.

A veterans memorial as we left
You always have to make way to the commercial vessels including this barge.
There was a little fog coming off the water this morning.
It is always nice to see the sunrise even thru clouds

This whole area reminds us of the Bay of Quinte when we sailed in the Thousand Islands a couple of years ago.

9:30am- As we motor down the North River, Steve told me we had to ensure we remain in the channel. The rest of the river is only 4ft deep and that is perhaps why there are mined field of crab pots on the outside of the channel.
Passing some friendly sailors
2:30pm- We just entered the Alligator Pungo River Canal. In the chart book, they say to keep an eye on deer, bears and even alligators have been spotted here.  Don't worry Morgan (my neighbour's daughter who keeps asking us what we have seen) we have not seen any bears or alligators yet.
3:45pm- Just crossing under the Fairfield Bridge on the Alligator River-Pungo Canal.

After a couple of hours, we finally see something coming up the canal. It was a big tugboat.  We can't help notice the smell of musty/muddy waters along the canal.  Lots of Supposedly, there was a fire not too long ago and it stripped a lot of branches off the trees.  It seems like life is coming back.

Seeing that this was going to be a long day, I decided to start making dinner.  In order to cook while moving, I had to make sure I put on these clamps which prevents the pot from rolling off the stove.  You screw it tight beside the pot.  Yummy...chicken, potatoes, carrots from the garden and broccoli.
This is showing one of the clamps

5:15pm- Going under the Wilkerson Bridge officially known as the Walter B Jones bridge.

This used to be the old bridge but of course they took it down.

6:15pm- We made it to Dowry Marine.  We covered 71.62 miles.  We filled up with fuel and filled the GaYa with water.  Ready for another day.  No heater needed tonight since it is warm.

Enjoyed our dinner, took a shower and relaxed.
